3 Santa Barbara, CA Santa Barbara, CA Temporary Temporary $27 an hour $27 an hour A Day in the Life The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's mission is to conserve California native plants and habitats for the health and well-being of people and the planet.
The Garden is a living museum which fosters the conservation of California's native plants through our gardens, research, and education, and serves as a role model of sustainable practices.
Within this mission's scope, the Education team's goal is to enable transformative experiences through native plants for the Garden visitor.
The Science Illustration Fellowship is a grant-funded program made possible by the Maxwell-Hanrahan Foundation.
Working with the Garden's Education department, this temporary fellowship position is for an illustrator in the early stages of their professional journey.
The person in this role will generate interpretive media for use in the Garden's displays, and provide public programming focused on the nexus of science and art.
Works produced for this fellowship may be displayed in the Pritzlaff Conservation Center as part of an exhibition during the fellowship or at a future date.
This part-time, temporary position (305 hours) begins in April 2024, and reports to the Interpretation and Exhibitions Curator.
The candidate will coordinate the timing of those hours and the location of performance as part of the selection process.

What You'll Do Work with Garden staff to develop illustrations for interpretive materials including signs, panels, posters, and/or digital media Develop materials to engage children and families with nature, conservation, and research during their visit to Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
Such communication about the conservation of native plants and habitats and may include:
Diagrams/infographics for interpretive signage.
Specific upcoming projects include signs on firewise horticulture, sequoia tree rings, and a dudleya installation.
Native plant and animal illustrations for family engagement, including:
Scavenger hunt illustrations Trading cards featuring plants for restoration and increasing biodiversity in the built environment Field guide zines You Must Be Able To Adapt your style to fit our brand's illustration style guide Stand/walk for extended periods of time Lift and carry 25 lbs.
, bend, squat, and walk stairs and Garden trails You Will Definitely Need A degree/certification in science or botanical illustration within the last five years (or be pursuing such a degree/certification).
This is an early career opportunity.
Knowledge of ecology, botany, and/or natural history of California preferred Skills in both digital and analog botanical or science illustration are imperative Excellent time management skills Flexibility and the ability to respond appropriately to diverse group situations Excellent verbal communication skills with professionals and the public It Would Be Nice if You Had Experience in a botanic garden, environmental education, and/or a museum setting.
Experience with informal education activities in a natural setting.
